Chapters

  1. 1923 to 1932

    Split-seconds first, Art Deco cases

Patek's first wrist chronograph, made on special order in 1923, was already a split-seconds model built from a small pocket watch movement blank. From around 1927 the workshops made wrist chronographs as regular production, in round, square, rectangular, tonneau and cushion cases. Those without split-seconds were monopushers, with start, stop and reset worked through the crown.

  2. 1932 to 1964

    The Sterns and Ref. 130

Jean and Charles Stern bought Patek Philippe in 1932 and judged that chronographs had a bright future. Ref. 130, with pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock, became the archetype of the house's wrist chronographs; a larger 36.5mm Ref. 530 followed in 1937. From 1939 a reworked Valjoux 23VZ calibre powered these watches for about twenty-five years.

Worn by

Count Carlo Felice TrossiSport1932

The gentleman racing driver took delivery in 1932 of a 46mm Patek chronograph, an early example of the house making oversized chronographs for the cockpit.

Moments

Patek Philippe bought the yellow gold, black dial Ref. 2512 split-seconds chronograph at Christie's in 2000 for a hammer price of CHF 1,439,750 and placed it in its museum. That 46mm watch is the model behind the 1998 Ref. 5070.

A pink gold Ref. 1463 from 1950 with a two-tone dial, retailed by Serpico y Laino of Caracas, sold for $600,000, the record for any watch sold in a Christie's online sale (the release gives sale dates of November 24 to December 10).

A Ref. 1463 retailed by Serpico y Laino with a pink dial in a pink gold case realised $565,150 after ten minutes of bidding at The New York Watch Auction: NINE.

A steel 1463 made in 1950 and offered for the first time by the original owner's family sold for USD 336,500 against an estimate of USD 150,000 to 250,000 in December 2017.

Generations and strap changes

  1. 2022
    Ref. 5470P

1/10th second monopusher chronograph: the CH 29-535 PS 1/10 runs at 36,000 semi-oscillations per hour and drives a red tenths hand that turns once every 12 seconds. Platinum case based on the 5370, with a diamond at 6 o'clock.

41mm by 13.68mm, on a navy calfskin strap embossed with a fabric pattern and a platinum fold-over clasp.

  2. 2018
    Ref. 7150/250R

A ladies' manual chronograph on the CH 29-535 PS, with a diamond bezel, faceted lugs recalling the Ref. 1579 and pushers echoing the 1463. Phillips calls it the only Patek chronograph aimed mainly at women.

38mm case on a crocodile strap with pink gold pin buckle; Delugs lists 20mm lugs.

  3. 1998
    Ref. 5070

Lemania 2310-based CH 27-70 at 18,000 vph in a stepped-bezel case, first in yellow gold with a black dial, later in white gold, rose gold and platinum. Its tachymeter and railway seconds track fill the space a 27mm movement leaves in a large case.

42mm case, 6mm larger than the 36mm 3970; Delugs lists 21mm lugs for the 5070J-001.

  4. 1940
    Ref. 1463 Tasti Tondi

Waterproof case with a ten-sided screw back and round pushers, powered by the 13''' calibre. Steel examples are ultra rare; Phillips counts 67 known in steel.

Auction examples measure 34.5mm to 35mm and are catalogued on leather straps with Patek buckles.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
