    The Piaget story

    1. 1874 Founded in La Cote-aux-Fees, Swiss Jura, Switzerland by Georges-Edouard Piaget.
    2. 1943 Under Timothee Piaget the firm moved from making movements for others to its own watches; Piaget became a registered trademark in 1943 and opened a larger manufacture in La Cote-aux-Fees in 1945.
    3. 1957 Piaget showed the hand-wound calibre 9P at the Basel Fair, a movement 2 mm thick that made ultra-thin watches the house signature.
    4. 1979 Piaget launched the Polo, a gold watch with an integrated bracelet powered by the ultra-thin quartz calibre 7P, named after the sport when the house's agent for the Americas insisted a watch needed a name.
    5. 1988 Cartier took control of Piaget and Baume et Mercier in April 1988, buying about 60 percent while the Piaget family kept 40 percent.
    6. 2016 Piaget launched the steel Polo S in New York on July 14, 2016 with nine Game Changers, among them tennis player David Goffin and polo player Malcolm Borwick, each chosen to wear the Polo S.

    Firsts and innovations

    1960. The micro-rotor calibre 12P, 2.3 mm thick, which Piaget calls the thinnest automatic movement in the world at its launch.

    2014. The Altiplano 900P, 3.65 mm thick, fused case and movement into one unit to become the thinnest hand-wound mechanical watch of its time.

    2018. The Altiplano Ultimate Concept, 2 mm thick including case and sapphire crystal, was the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced at that time, a record later beaten by Bulgari and Richard Mille.

    What is lug width?

    The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

    Measure it in 30 seconds

    1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
    2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
    3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

    Strap, quick release or system?

    Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
