Two divers on day one
Breitling launched the time-only ref. 1004 and the ref. 807 chronograph together in 1957, both named SuperOcean and both rated to 200 m. The 807 put white subdials on a black dial, wrapped the crystal in a concave bezel and kept the 39 mm case thin with long lugs. Phillips notes that most of them seem to have disappeared under the sea.
- 1964 to 1983
Slow Motion to Deep Sea
The 1964 ref. 2005 dropped the seconds hand for a central minute counter, the Slow Motion, and Willy Breitling added a dot at 6 o'clock that showed whether the chronograph ran. In 1969 the Chrono-matic calibre went into the ref. 2105, and in 1983 the quartz Deep Sea ref. 81190 reached 1000 m with a helium valve in the caseback.
- 1995 to 2014
A professional diver returns
The name came back in 1995 as the Colt SuperOcean, rated to 1000 m, and the 1998 Colt SuperOcean Professional reached 1500 m. The Superocean became a collection of its own in 2000, and in 2005 the 44 mm Steelfish X-Plus, 16.1 mm thick, went to 2000 m.
- 2015 to 2019
Superocean II in three sizes
At Baselworld 2015 Breitling redesigned the line as the Superocean II with new fonts and proportions, and added a 36 mm size to the existing 42 and 44 mm. Depth ratings rose with the size: 200 m for the 36, 500 m for the 42 and 1000 m with a helium valve for the 44.
- 2019
Surfers take over
In September 2019 Breitling tested the Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown at Kelly Slater's Surf Ranch in California, part of a Superocean range of 18 references in four sizes. It came with NATO-style straps in Econyl, a nylon recycled from discarded fishing nets.
- 2022 to today
The Slow Motion comes back
In 2022 Breitling rebuilt the Superocean on the codes of the 1960s Slow Motion: squared hands, a high-contrast minute ring and ceramic bezels, in 36, 42, 44 and 46 mm, all rated to 300 m. The 46 mm keeps a bidirectional bezel with a patented lock; the others turn one way.
✦2022. Signature edition: the Superocean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater, 1,000 pieces, pairs an orange dial with a military-green rubber strap. Slater chose orange for his father's surf watch and green for the airbrush colours of his boyhood boards.
✦2022. Breitling unveiled the new Superocean to media and retailers at the Wheels & Waves surf and motorcycle festival in Biarritz, with surfers Andrew Cotton, Jeremy Flores and Natxo Gonzalez on hand.
✦2019. Breitling launched the Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown at Kelly Slater's Surf Ranch, just south of Fresno, California, where the watch, rated to 1,000 m, was tested on the man-made wave during the Breitling Summit.
✦2016. At Phillips' Start-Stop-Reset sale of steel chronographs in Geneva on 14 May 2016, a 1958 SuperOcean ref. 807 offered at CHF 15,000 to 30,000 sold for CHF 65,000.
✦At Phillips' Hong Kong Watch Auction XIII, a 1961 ref. 807 on its steel bracelet, estimated HK$160,000 to 240,000, sold for HK$403,200. The lot essay calls it one of the rarest dive chronographs on the market.
