The story · Since 2003

The story of the Cartier Roadster

Cartier, the house of the Santos and the Tank, turned to the motor car for its first new collection of the 21st century: a tonneau case drawn from 1950s sports cars, a date magnifier shaped like a headlight, and straps that came off without tools. Dropped after about a decade, it came back at Watches and Wonders 2026.

Chapters

  1. 2003 to 2009

    Chronograph, GMT and colour

A chronograph followed in 2003, with a Roman numeral dial and slightly oval sub-registers. A smaller size arrived in 2005, steel and gold and a GMT in 2006, and pastel blue, pink and purple dials from 2008.

  2. 2010 to 2012

    Roadster S, then retirement

The Roadster S of 2010 flattened the case and crystal, dropped the date magnifier and visible screws, and offered a black ADLC bezel on a rubber strap. Cartier ended production of the original Roadster around 2012.

  3. 2012 to 2026

    A cult among car people

Out of the catalogue, the Roadster built a following among collectors, car enthusiasts in particular. Cartier's Louis Ferla told Europa Star the house had noticed renewed interest in the model, including on the vintage market.

  4. April 2026

    Back at Watches and Wonders

(April 2026) Back at Watches and Wonders: Cartier relaunched the Roadster with seven references in two sizes, large on the 1847 MC and medium on the 1899 MC. Four new rivets were added to the bezel, the bracelet got shorter links, and the bracelet uses the QuickSwitch system for tool-free strap changes.

Moments

2026. Cartier unveiled the new Roadster at Watches and Wonders Geneva in April 2026. Louis Ferla told Europa Star the decision followed a convergence of signals from clients and the vintage market.

2016. Antiquorum sold a Ref. 2524 Roadster 'Emerson Fittipaldi' in yellow gold, its caseback engraved with the champion's signature, for USD 8,750 in New York on 8 October 2016, against an estimate of USD 4,000 to 6,000.

2014. Felipe VI chose a blue-dial Roadster for his proclamation before the Cortes Generales on 19 June 2014, a watch barely visible between his gloves and tunic cuffs. When Cartier relaunched the line in 2026, Vanity Fair read the new steel model with a dark blue dial and extra navy blue rubber strap as a direct nod to it.

FAQ

What lug width does the Cartier Roadster use?

The Cartier Roadster takes a 19 mm strap: all 1 references with a known width use 19 mm. These widths come from our database and are not yet verified.

Which strap system does the 2026 Roadster use?

Every 2026 Roadster uses Cartier's patented QuickSwitch system on both the metal bracelet and the second strap, so they swap by hand. Swisswatches reports the system now carries a new patent.

Did the original Roadster already have interchangeable straps?

Yes. Its tool-free swap between bracelet and strap was one of its most forward-looking features, and Japanese press described a lever release that freed the bracelet in one touch.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
