The Doxa story

  1. 1889 Founded in Le Locle, Switzerland by Georges Ducommun.
  2. 1907 Ducommun patented the 8-Day DOXA calibre, a dashboard clock movement that became standard equipment on Bugatti racing cars and was later fitted in ships and aircraft.
  3. 1967 Developed by product chief Urs Eschle with diver Claude Wesly, the SUB 300 was unveiled at the Basel fair as a professional dive watch sold to the general public: orange dial, oversized minute hand, and a patented rotating bezel that reads the US Navy no-decompression table, depth on the outer ring and safe dive time on the inner ring.
  4. 1968 Jacques-Yves Cousteau secured exclusive distribution of the SUB in the Americas for his company U.S. Divers; those watches carried the twin-hose Aqua Lung logo on the dial.
  5. 1969 Doxa became the official watch of the Swiss Army's new elite combat diver unit; each diver received an orange SUB 300T, and DOXA's CEO says only 146 pieces were delivered to the once-secret unit.
  6. 1973 Clive Cussler introduced Dirk Pitt, whose first appearance was in The Mediterranean Caper, the first novel in the series; Pitt's orange-faced DOXA first appears in Iceberg and makes numerous appearances in the novels. Cussler himself was given an orange-dial SUB 300T by the owner of the dive shop where he worked part time, when he left that job.

Firsts and innovations

1967. The FH describes the SUB as the first diver's watch with a patented rotating bezel to monitor dive time and ensure a no-decompression ascent.

1967. DOXA's own release calls the 1967 SUB the world's first orange-faced dive watch, a colour chosen after visibility tests in Lake Neuchatel.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
