The story · Since 1982

The story of the Omega Constellation Manhattan

Omega rebuilt the Constellation in 1982, in the middle of the quartz revolution, and held its crystal down with four claws borrowed from a shaving mirror. Asia Tatler reports the result outsold the Speedmaster and Seamaster collections by volume.

Chapters

  1. 1982

    Quartz, claws and no bezel

Omega launched the Constellation Manhattan in 1982 on the ultra-thin quartz calibre 1422, developed jointly with ETA. Four screwed claws, the Griffes, sat at 3 and 9 o'clock and pressed the crystal and gasket against the case for water resistance. Hour markers were painted on the crystal, which removed the need for a bezel.

  2. 1984 to 1985

    A chronometer and a patent

An automatic version arrived in 1984 with calibre 1111, a certified chronometer based on the ETA 2892-2. Monochrome credits the design to Carol Didisheim and dates the patent to 1985: a barrel-shaped case in gold, steel or both, for men and women.

  3. 1995

    Cindy's Choice

The 1995 revamp moved the Roman numerals from the dial to the bezel and kept the claws, even though they were no longer needed for water resistance. Omega started working with ambassadors that year, and the Constellation became known as Cindy's Choice after Cindy Crawford.

  4. 2009

    Refined claws, Mono Rang bracelet

Omega redesigned the whole Constellation line in October 2009. The claws were refined, the new Mono Rang bracelets were re-engineered for comfort with butterfly clasps, and the 38 mm model took the in-house Co-Axial calibre 8500/8501.

  5. 2018

    101 references for women

The November 2018 Manhattan collection came in 25, 28 and 29 mm with 101 references and bevelled case and link edges. The 29 mm models run on Master Chronometer Co-Axial calibre 8700 with a 50-hour power reserve; the smaller sizes are quartz.

Worn by

Cindy CrawfordCulture1995

The model became an Omega ambassador in 1995, tied to the relaunched women's Constellation. Omega's parent group wrote in 2009 that she had been wearing Constellations since 1995 and had a hand in their design, which is why the line was nicknamed Cindy's Choice.

Moments

1995. With Cindy Crawford as ambassador, the Constellation became Cindy's Choice; her ads later carried only her name and the words MY CHOICE.

1982. The four claws came from an acquaintance's shaving mirror held by four claws; on the watch they press the sapphire crystal and rubber gasket against the case.

Designed by

Carol Didisheimdesigner1982

Didisheim designed the Constellation Manhattan, one of the few women in watch design at the time; Monochrome dates the patent to 1985.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
