The story · Since 1989
Patek Philippe sold its first repeating watch in 1839, the year it was founded, and one of its first minute repeater wristwatches went to Ralph Teetor, a blind engineer who used it to hear the time. Today a member of the Stern family still listens to every repeater before it reaches its owner.

For the 150th anniversary in 1989, Patek introduced its first in-house repeater calibre, the R 27, in the Ref. 3974 perpetual calendar and the time-only Ref. 3979. The Ref. 3939 of 1993 hid a tourbillon behind a plain enamel dial, and only 30 pieces of the officer-cased Ref. 5029 were made in 1997 for the new Plan-les-Ouates manufacture.
The 38 mm Ref. 5078 replaced the 3979 in 2005, and the 42 mm Ref. 5074 brought cathedral gongs that wrap twice around the movement. A first modern ladies' repeater, Ref. 7000R, arrived in 2011, and the Ref. 5178 of 2017 put cathedral gongs in a time-only watch.
The Ref. 5303 of 2019 removed the dial so the hammers and gongs could be watched at work on the wrist. In 2021 the Advanced Research Ref. 5750P added a sapphire wafer that lets the chime carry six times as far. By 2026 the catalogue held more than 20 repeater references.
The engineer who invented cruise control had been blind since childhood; he bought Patek's first minute repeater wristwatch, made in 1924, and used it to hear the time. The watch, in a platinum and gold cushion case, is now in the Patek Philippe Museum.
The banker collected a yellow gold tonneau minute repeater in person at Patek's Geneva headquarters on 16 June 1928, his first Patek repeater wristwatch, engraved with his family motto.

2016. Patek gathered eleven minute repeaters in its New York offices for a live-streamed Robb Report master class comparing how case metal and gems change the sound.
2012. At Sotheby's in June 2012, Henry Graves Jr.'s yellow gold tonneau repeater, previously unknown, sold for $2,994,500 against an $800,000 high estimate.

No. 3 different lug widths appear across the line, often by case size or generation. Check the reference engraved on the case back or between the lugs.
It depends on the reference. Patek's technical data gives 20 mm for the 5303R and the 5207P, 21 mm for the 5750P and the 5216R, and 22 mm for the 44 mm 5208P.
Usually an alligator strap with a fold-over clasp: hand-stitched navy blue on the 5207G, hand-stitched shiny black with a rose gold clasp on the 5303R, shiny orange with black seams and a platinum clasp on the 5750P.
Patek says no water exposure: on the 5207, the slot for the repeater slide means the case is not protected against moisture even with a water resistant crown, and Patek lists the 5303R as humidity- and dust-protected only, not water-resistant.
No. The 5207 comes with a sapphire-crystal back and an interchangeable solid back, and Patek says only its master watchmakers in Geneva may exchange them; Geneva is the only location authorized to service minute repeaters.
Cathedral gongs wrap twice around the movement and need more room, which is why the time-only 5178 is 40 mm while the 5078 with classic gongs is 38 mm.

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
