The story · Since 1913

The story of the Seiko Presage

In 2010 a Seiko mechanical watch inspired by the cocktail bar was made for the Japanese market. It drew attention on the world's watch blogs and forums, and in 2017 Seiko based a series of its mechanical Presage collection on it.

1913 The Laurel as starting point Seiko traces Presage design back to the Laurel, Japan's first domestically made wristwatch, completed in 1913 with an enamel dial.
2010 to 2016 A cocktail watch for Japan Seiko and bartender Shinobu Ishigaki of Bar Ishinohana created three Japan-only Cocktail Time watches in 2010, led by the ice blue SARB065 "Cool".
2013 to today Craft dials from Japanese workshops An enamel watch planned in 2013 for the 100th anniversary of Seiko watches drew reservations before release and sold out immediately, so Seiko made enamel a regular Presage dial.
2016 to 2017 Presage goes worldwide Seiko announced the international launch of Presage at Baselworld 2016, with mechanical calibres from 4R to 8R.

The Laurel as starting point
Seiko traces Presage design back to the Laurel, Japan's first domestically made wristwatch, completed in 1913 with an enamel dial. Its Arabic numerals and red 12 return again and again on Presage dials.
2010 to 2016
A cocktail watch for Japan
Seiko and bartender Shinobu Ishigaki of Bar Ishinohana created three Japan-only Cocktail Time watches in 2010, led by the ice blue SARB065 "Cool". The watch spread on blogs and forums abroad and sold for years with almost no advertising.
2013 to today
Craft dials from Japanese workshops
An enamel watch planned in 2013 for the 100th anniversary of Seiko watches drew reservations before release and sold out immediately, so Seiko made enamel a regular Presage dial. Enamel by Mitsuru Yokosawa, urushi lacquer by Isshu Tamura, Shippo enamel and Arita porcelain followed.
2016 to 2017
Presage goes worldwide
Seiko announced the international launch of Presage at Baselworld 2016, with mechanical calibres from 4R to 8R. In 2017 eight cocktail-inspired models joined the Presage collection.
2019 to 2021
Back to the 1964 Crown
The 1964 Crown Chronograph, Japan's first wrist chronograph, inspired the SRQ031 of 2019, three-hand models in 2020 and the Style60's series in 2021. Spring Drive also entered Presage for the first time in 2019.
2023 to 2026
The Laurel becomes regular
For the 110th anniversary of Seiko wristwatches in 2023 the SPB359 and SPB401 reworked the Laurel's numerals. In 2026 the enamel HCC005 and urushi HCC006 made that Laurel look a regular, non-limited Presage.

Moments

2024. The Presage Kintaro Hattori Limited Edition revived the 1924 watch that first carried the Seiko name: 35 mm, white enamel dial, pull-through strap.

2019. Seiko put its Spring Drive movement into Presage for the first time, in two models announced in September 2019.

2016. Seiko took Presage worldwide at Baselworld 2016; an enamel dial limited edition was shown at the same fair, and a full enamel collection followed in 2017.

2013. The enamel model for the 100th anniversary of Seiko wristwatches drew reservations before release and sold out at once; even its product developer never saw one in a store.

About Seiko

Hattori and engineer Tsuruhiko Yoshikawa set up the Seikosha factory in Tokyo to make wall clocks; within six to seven years it was Japan's largest wall clock maker.

Seiko Presage references use 17 mm or 20 mm or 22 mm depending on the reference and case size, so check yours in the list below. The most common is 20 mm (281 of 360 references with a known width). Do all 36 mm Presage Classic Series models take the same strap?

No. Seiko lists 18 mm between the lugs for the 36.0 mm SPB521J1 but 20 mm for the 35.9 mm enamel SPB537J1. Check the exact reference.

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
