Apple Watch band sizes

Apple Watch bands fit by size group, not by generation: small bands (38, 40 and 41 mm, plus the 42 mm case of 2024 and later) fit each other, and large bands (44, 45 and 46 mm) fit each other and the 49 mm Ultra.

Where Apple's own pages disagree

  • 42 mm bands go with 44 mm and 45 mm. Apple Support lists bands for 42 mm, 44 mm and 45 mm cases as compatible with each other. The sentence does not say which 42 mm case (2015 to 2017, or 2024 and later) it means.

    Official page: Apple

  • 42 mm bands go with 38 mm, 40 mm and 41 mm. The Apple Store band guide lists 38 mm, 40 mm, 41 mm and 42 mm bands as compatible with each other, without naming a generation.

    Official page: Apple

Apple's Series 10 announcement says older 41 mm bands fit the new 42 mm case, so the 2024 and later 42 mm case takes small bands. No Apple page we could open says which 42 mm case the support sentence describes, so for the 2015 to 2017 42 mm case the two Apple pages disagree.

How the bands attach

Every Apple Watch band slides into the case after you hold down the band release button. Apple says different Apple Watch bands use the same release mechanism.
