    The Yema story

    1. 1966 Yema released the first Yachtingraf, a regatta chronograph with a Swiss Valjoux calibre and a countdown for race starts, for which it filed a patent. In 1968 Yema became official supplier to the French sailing team and gave a Yachtingraf to yachtsman Eric Tabarly.
    2. 1967 On 12 May 1967 Yema filed a patent for an in-house locking mechanism for the rotating bezel of the Superman. In 1970 the French Air Force chose the Superman for its helicopter rescue divers.
    3. 1978 Yema's Besançon factory on rue des Cras, opened in 1961 for 300,000 watches a year, reached its production peak in 1978 with 1.3 million watches; in 1977 it had made one million, 200,000 of them quartz.
    4. 1985 On 17 June 1985 Patrick Baudry flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-51G, the first Franco-American orbital flight) wearing a Yema Spationaute II. On 26 November 1988 Jean-Loup Chrétien joined the Mir station with the Spationaute III, powered by the Seiko 7A38.
    5. 2019 For the 50th anniversary of his Indianapolis win, Yema and Mario Andretti released the Rallye Andretti limited edition of 1,969 pieces, a 39 mm near copy of his 1969 watch with an automatic Valjoux 7753, made in collaboration with Andretti.

    Firsts and innovations

    2021. Yema presented the Navygraf Marine Nationale GMT as the first official GMT watch of the French Navy.

    What is lug width?

    The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

    Measure it in 30 seconds

    1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
    2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
    3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

    Strap, quick release or system?

    Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
