The story of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept

It began in 2002 as a one-off stylistic exercise for the Royal Oak's 30th birthday, cut from an aerospace alloy no watch had used. Nineteen years later a unique Black Panther version sold for US$5.20m, an all-time record for the brand at auction.

Chapters

  1. 2002 to 2004

    A stylistic exercise for thirty

Audemars Piguet marked the Royal Oak's 30th anniversary with the Concept, known internally as CW1. Its 44 mm case was cut from Alacrite 602, a cobalt-based alloy from aerospace and medicine, under a titanium bezel. It was meant as a single experiment, and the brand's heritage director later called it a mere stylistic exercise.

  2. 2008 to 2011

Carbon and a second time zone

The 2008 Concept Carbon used a forged carbon case and turned the mainplate into the dial, with a 237-hour power reserve from calibre 2895. In 2011 the GMT Tourbillon paired a satin titanium case with a ceramic bezel and added a second time indicator at 3 o'clock.

  3. 2015 to 2016

    A driver's request, a louder chime

In late 2010 Michael Schumacher asked AP for a mechanical watch able to time consecutive laps; the Laptimer arrived in 2015 after almost five years of work. The same year the RD#1 prototype opened the Supersonnerie story, a minute repeater eight years in the making, which went into series in 2016.

  4. 2021 to 2023

    Superheroes on the tourbillon

A partnership with Marvel, opened with help from actor Don Cheadle, put a hand-painted white gold Black Panther over the flying tourbillon in 2021, in a new 42 mm case limited to 250 pieces. Spider-Man followed in May 2023, suspended in a skeletonised calibre.

  5. 2023 to 2025

A new case and quick straps

The Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date of 2023 introduced a 43 mm titanium case and the first interchangeable strap of the collection. The case later came in CFT carbon, and a 43 mm Tourbillon designed with the artist KAWS put a COMPANION figure at its heart.

FAQ

Can I change the strap myself?

On the 43 mm generation launched in 2023, yes: a click and release system is built into the case and the triple-blade clasp. The 42 mm Spider-Man of 2023 was the first 42 mm Concept with the same interchangeable system.

Which case sizes exist?

44 mm for most models since 2002, 38.5 mm for the 2018 Flying Tourbillon for women, 42 mm since the 2021 Black Panther, and 43 mm for the later Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date.

Does a second strap come in the box?

Often. The 2020 Flying Tourbillon GMT came with an additional black rubber strap, the Black Panther with an additional rubber strap, and the Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT with a second black interchangeable rubber strap.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
