The story · Since 1934

The Hanhart story

  1. 1934 Hanhart opened a second manufactory in Gütenbach in the Black Forest; the site still makes the Hanhart stopwatch collection, and in 1997 administration and production were merged there.
  2. 1981 Facing cheap quartz movements from the Far East, the Gütenbach works developed the low-cost Caliber 3305, which went into production in 1982 and, according to Hanhart, sold 40 million units.
  3. 2014 A group of entrepreneurs who had owned Hanhart between 1992 and 2008 took the company over again, first the wristwatch business and two years later the stopwatch factory; Simon Hall and Felix Wallner have run it since.
  4. 2020 Hanhart relaunched the 417 ES, its 1950s Bundeswehr pilot's chronograph; Motor Sport links the revival to Steve McQueen, who was frequently seen wearing a 417 ES.
  5. 2026 With approval from Steve McQueen's descendants, Hanhart released the 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1, 300 pieces in a 39 mm case with his signature on the dial; Monochrome calls it the first officially licensed McQueen edition of the 417 ES.

Firsts and innovations

1924. Hanhart says Wilhelm (Willy) Hanhart launched the world's first affordable mechanical stopwatch in 1924, after seeing organisers at an athletics festival struggle to find four stopwatches.

1939. The red reset pusher, meant to stop the timed interval being reset by accident, has equipped Hanhart chronographs since the 1939 TachyTele, according to Europa Star.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
