From Mecaquartz to double chronograph
IWC had no true pilot's chronograph until 1988, when it launched the Mecaquartz reference IW3741. In 1992 its engineers built the Doppelchronograph IW3711 on a Valjoux base in a few weeks, a watch that could time two intervals at once and gave IWC its name for robust chronographs.
- 1994 to 2005
The 39 mm Fliegerchronograph
In 1994 IWC presented its first mechanical pilot's chronograph, reference 3706 in steel, alongside reference 3705 in matte black zirconium oxide ceramic. The steel 3706 measured 39 mm, ran on Valjoux 7750 based calibres and stayed in the catalogue until 2005.
- 2007 to 2015
Ceramic TOP GUN and bigger cases
In 2007 IWC put a double chronograph in black ceramic and named it after the US Navy Fighter Weapons School, starting the TOP GUN family. In 2012 the standard steel chronograph grew by 1 mm to 43 mm and gained an altimeter-style triple date window and a new steel bracelet with fine adjustment.
- 2016 to 2020
In-house calibres take over
In 2016 the 43 mm chronograph returned to a single date window. For 2019 IWC fitted its own column-wheel calibre 69380 to the pilot's chronograph for the first time, in the 41 mm Spitfire models in steel and bronze and in 44.5 mm ceramic TOP GUN models.
- 2021 to 2026
41 mm, quick-change straps, Formula One
In April 2021 the Chronograph 41 brought the in-house 69385 calibre, 100 m water resistance and the EasX-CHANGE strap system to the core model; the 43 mm version followed in 2022. Performance Chronograph models for the Mercedes-AMG partnership arrived in 2023, the film F1 put one on the wrist of Damson Idris' character Joshua Pearce in 2025, and in 2026 driver George Russell co-designed an edition.
✦2026. On 5 February 2026 IWC unveiled the Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 George Russell IW389411, co-designed with the Mercedes driver: a 41.9 mm black ceramic case, dial printing in the blue of his helmet, the 69380 calibre and his number 63 engraved on the back.
✦2025. IWC is a sponsor of APXGP, the fictional team in F1 (2025). Damson Idris's character Joshua Pearce wears the gold Performance Chronograph 41 IW388309, and IWC added APXGP-inspired chronographs to the line at Watches and Wonders on 1 April 2025.
✦2022. At a Friday press conference at the first Miami Grand Prix in May 2022, Lewis Hamilton arrived wearing three IWC watches, the new Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG team edition among them, as part of his protest against the FIA's proposed jewellery ban.
✦2022. The recruits in Top Gun: Maverick wear IWC's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor watches, among them the Pilot's Watch Chronograph IW389004, a ceramic model sold only to TOPGUN graduates in real life. Monochrome identifies them on Lewis Pullman, Miles Teller and Monica Barbaro without saying which actor wears which model.
✦2021. IWC says the ceramic 3705 sold poorly and was dropped after about a thousand pieces, then turned cult among collectors; one from former IWC head Gunter Blumlein's collection sold at auction for US$53,750. In 2021 IWC answered with the Tribute to 3705 IW387905, 1,000 pieces in a 41 mm Ceratanium case.
