An anniversary gives it a name
For IWC's 125th anniversary, marketing and sales director Hannes Pantli reissued Reference 325 as a small limited series and named it the Portugieser. The Ref. 5441 came in 1,000 steel, 500 gold and 250 platinum pieces with the calibre 9828, sold out quickly and, says IWC, set off a global trend towards larger wristwatches.
- 1995 to 2000
Chronographs and a seven-day automatic
The Portugieser returned in 1995 as the Rattrapante Ref. 3712, followed in 1998 by the simpler Chronograph Ref. 3714. In 2000 came the first Portugieser Automatic, whose design IWC still calls the DNA of today's Automatic 42.
- 2003 to 2010
Calendars and a Yacht Club
In 2003 Kurt Klaus's perpetual calendar entered the family with the Ref. 5021, its moon phase needing a one-day correction only after 577.5 years. In 2010 IWC folded its 1967 Yacht Club name into the line with the 45 mm Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph Ref. 3902, drawn by chief designer Christian Knoop.
- 2020
An in-house chronograph
After 22 years, the 3714 gave way on 3 February 2020 to the Ref. 3716, with the same face, the in-house column-wheel calibre 69355 behind a see-through back and a new butterfly folding clasp on steel models. The same year the time-only Portugieser Automatic 40 joined the collection.

Slimmer cases, an Aiguille d'Or
On 9 April 2024 IWC re-engineered the Portugieser Automatic 42 with a slimmer case, double box-glass sapphires and a seven-day calibre 52011. That November the Portugieser Eternal Calendar won the Aiguille d'Or, the top prize of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve.
✦2024. On 13 November 2024 the Portugieser Eternal Calendar won the Aiguille d'Or Grand Prix at the 24th GPHG.
✦1993. The watch had no name until 1993: IWC chose Portugieser to recall the two Portuguese dealers behind Reference 325 and to evoke navigation and precision.
✦1939. Despite its name, the first Reference 325 left Schaffhausen on 22 February 1939 for L. Schwarcz, a Ukrainian wholesaler in Odessa. The first watches reached Portugal only in February and June 1942.
