Chapters

  1. 1983

    Watches for drivers

Seiko launched its collaboration with Giugiaro Design in 1983 with watches meant to suit the wrists of car and motorcycle drivers. The family, sold as Speed Master, included analogue quartz chronographs on the new 7A28 calibre and digital LCD chronographs whose display tilts toward a driver holding the wheel.

  2. 1986

    Ripley and Bishop in Aliens

In James Cameron's Aliens, Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley wears the 7A28-7000 and Lance Henriksen's android Bishop wears the 7A28-6000. The watches were not made for the film; both had been on sale since 1983.

  3. 2013

    Thirtieth anniversary chronographs

Seiko marked thirty years of the partnership with six limited Seiko x Giugiaro Design chronographs in its Spirit range, 40.8 mm quartz pieces shaped like the originals; the red SCED003 echoes the Bishop.

  4. 2015

    The Ripley returns

Seiko reissued the Ripley design as the SCED035 in steel and the SCED037 in black hard-coated steel, each limited to 3,000 pieces, with the 7T12 quartz chronograph.

  5. 2018

    The digital driver's watch reborn

For the 35th anniversary Seiko recreated the digital driver's chronograph as the SBJG001 and SBJG003, 3,000 pieces each, keeping the tilted LCD and the bezel that switches modes. Six store editions of 500 pieces followed.

Designed by

Giorgetto Giugiarodesigner1983

The Italian car designer drew Seiko's 1983 Speed Master watches: asymmetric analogue chronographs on the 7A28 calibre, including the 7A28-7000 and 7A28-6000, and digital chronographs with tilted displays. Seiko's museum credits the chronograph's design innovation to him.

Generations and strap changes

  1. 2018
    Ref. SBJG001 / SBJG003

The digital reissue on calibre A825 in a 39.4 mm case, with backlit LCD and serial-numbered case back bearing the Giugiaro Design logo.

Supplied on a solid stainless steel bracelet; HWG lists a 20 mm strap width for SBJG001.

    Ref. 7A28-7000 "Ripley"

An analogue quartz chronograph whose pushers sit at both ends of a block on the right of the case, placed for the right hand while the left grips the steering wheel. Seiko's museum calls its 1983 Speedmaster the world's first analogue quartz chronograph.

    Ref. 7A28-6000 "Bishop"

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
