Gold for the Moon men
Omega made 1,014 gold Speedmaster BA145.022 between 1969 and 1973 to mark Apollo 11. Numbers 1 and 2 were presented to President Nixon and Vice President Agnew; both now sit in the Omega Museum. Most astronauts received pieces with engraved casebacks at a Houston dinner on November 25, 1969, and the majority of the rest were made available to the public.
- 1980 to 1989
The engraving comes back
Around 1980 Omega issued about 300 numbered yellow gold BA 345.0802, one of the first Speedmasters with a display back, engraved Apollo XI 1969. In 1989 the 20th anniversary steel edition added a case band engraving and came in a wooden box with a Velcro strap.
- 1994 to 1999
Anniversaries every five years
From 1994 Omega settled into a five-year rhythm. The 25th anniversary came in steel, white gold and skeletonised platinum, and 1999 brought a 9,999-piece edition whose caseback quotes the words of the landing. Omega's own history also lists a 1999 white gold Moonphase for the 30th anniversary.
- 2004 to 2012
Panda dials and mission patches
The 2004 35th anniversary edition used a white dial with black subdials and printed the landing date July 20, 1969 in red. In 2009 the steel 40th anniversary edition put the Apollo XI mission patch on the subdial at 9 o'clock in sterling silver, and in 2012 Omega gave Apollo 17 a 925 silver dial embossed with that mission's patch.
- 2014
Titanium, Sedna gold, NATO strap
The 45th anniversary edition broke from tradition with a titanium case, a Sedna gold bezel and a laser-ablated grey dial. It was limited to 1,969 pieces and shipped on a NATO strap rather than a bracelet.
- 2019
Moonshine gold and calibre 3861
For the 50th anniversary Omega recreated the 1969 gold watch in its new Moonshine gold, limited to 1,014 pieces, and added a 6,969-piece steel edition with Buzz Aldrin on the small seconds subdial. Both were the first Speedmasters with the Master Chronometer calibre 3861.
