The story of the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side

Omega spent years failing to make a black Speedmaster with PVD and DLC before ceramic finally worked in 2013. The result took its name from the far side of the Moon that the Apollo 8 crew saw first, in 1968.

Chapters

  1. 2013

    A black Moonwatch at last

Unveiled at Baselworld 2013, the Dark Side of the Moon was the first Speedmaster with a black ceramic case, and its dial and bezel were ceramic too. Omega told Fratello it had tried PVD and DLC and never got a result it accepted. Inside sat the in-house column-wheel calibre 9300 from the 2011 Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph, and the price was CHF 10,000 before VAT.

  2. 2014 to 2017

    Grey, white and meteorite sides

A year later the Grey Side of the Moon paired a grey ceramic case with a platinum Pt950 dial. In 2015 Omega added Vintage Black, Sedna Black, Pitch Black and Black Black, plus a White Side of the Moon, and in 2016 a Grey Side with a Gibeon meteorite dial. The single watch had become a sub-collection.

  3. 2018 to 2020

    Hand-wound for Apollo 8

For the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8, Omega fitted the ceramic case with a hand-wound calibre 1869, based on the Lemania-derived 1861, laser-decorated to look like the lunar surface. The skeleton dial showed three counters and no date, and the watch was 2.5 mm thinner than the automatic models. In 2020 the same case carried a carbon-patterned Alinghi edition for the Swiss sailing team.

  4. 2024

    Master Chronometer Apollo 8

In January 2024 Omega replaced the Apollo 8 with ref. 310.92.44.50.01.001, powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 3869. The case kept its 44.25 mm diameter but lost 0.8 mm in height, and a Saturn V rocket became the small seconds hand.

  5. 2025

    Slimmer, and certified throughout

Twelve years after the original, Omega presented seven new models across four dials in October 2025. All moved to Master Chronometer calibres 9900, 9908 or 3869, with slimmer cases that keep the 44.25 mm diameter, and new rubber or nylon straps.

FAQ

What lug width does the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side use?

The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side takes a 21 mm strap: all 8 references with a known width use 21 mm. The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side ref. 310.92.44.50.01.001 and 311.92.44.51.01.007 take 21 mm (two independent sources agree).

What is the lug width of the Omega Dark Side of the Moon?

21 mm. Omega lists 21 mm between the lugs for the calibre 9300 models, the Grey Side, the Alinghi, the Apollo 8 and the calibre 9908 2025 model.

Do straps from an older Dark Side fit the 2025 models?

The width stays at 21 mm, but the case changed shape: lug-to-lug grew from 49.80 mm on the calibre 9300 models to 50.00 mm on the 2024 and 2025 models, and the cases are slimmer. A 21 mm strap fits by width; Omega does not state whether its own older straps fit the new cases.

Does the strap taper on the Apollo 8?

Yes. On the 2024 Apollo 8 the rubber strap goes from 21 mm at the lugs to 18 mm at the buckle, closed by a ceramised titanium folding clasp.

Which buckle came on the Dark Side of the Moon?

The 2013 original came on a black fabric strap with a black ceramic pin buckle. Later versions gained a ceramic and titanium foldover clasp, and the 2025 models use polished-brushed ceramic covers with ceramised titanium folders.

How thick is it on the wrist?

It depends on the movement: Omega lists 16.14 mm for the calibre 9300 models, 15.09 mm for the 2025 automatics, 13.02 mm for the hand-wound calibre 9908 version and 12.97 mm for the 2024 Apollo 8.

Help

What is lug width?

The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

Measure it in 30 seconds

  1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
  2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

Strap, quick release or system?

Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
